Under the title NORTHERN LIGHTS the recently-opened Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre presents its second major exhibition on nearly 900m2; the most spectacular photos from two photographers who for many belong to the absolute stars among the yacht photographers: Nico Krauss and Ulf Sommerwerck. Classic yachts are depicted in very special moments. These are photos with a dreamlike quality and will make every sailor’s heart beat faster.

Flensburg has been a great destination for friends of classic yachts since 1995 But in the past only the customers and invited guests had access to the yacht yard which is situated in Flensburg harbour. Now, yachting aficionados from around the world can visit the “Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre”. The centre is the dreamchild of  Oliver Berking, owner of the local silver makers that date back to 1874 and also founder of the yard, who wanted to create a centre for yachting history in which the working yard itself would play an important part.

“We plan to do three to four exhibitions per year”, said Oliver Berking. And alongside the changing exhibitions he also plans permanent features. “Apart from the many maritime items we will also show classic cars, create a Hall of Fame for the great men and women of yachting history and run a small but special museum shop.”

The exhibitions at the Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre explore the fascination of life in, around and on the water. Located next to the Robbe & Berking Classic yacht building yard, the Centre emphasises yachting history as a central focus. In addition to each exhibition, the Centre also houses the largest yachting library in the world, plus two galleries, a museum shop and a sizeable museum restaurant with a wonderful view of the historical centre of Flensburg.

The mission of the Yachting Heritage Centre is to preserve the tradition of classic yacht sailing and make the history and beauty of classic yachts accessible to the public. There is a popular 200-seat Italian restaurant on the site.
