Peter Newbery-Thornton of Devon Wooden Boats is a finalist for the Dinghy of the Year Award for his new Dash dinghy, built in wood as a high performance single handed sailer at his yard in Totnes.

The 12.2′ (3.7m) dinghy weighs just 60 kg sans rig and offers several different sizes of rig to suit a growing family of sailors. The price ranges from £10,895 to £11,495 depending on rig. Importantly the plywood content of its hull has less of a carbon footprint that GRP and Pete’s company motto is “reducing the plastic in our oceans one boat at a time”. It’s also the only wooden dinghy in the category and Peter’s hoping for support from wooden boat sailors and anyone who appreciates the Dash concept.

Peter using his Dash dinghy

As a trained shipwright Pete,  has restored several boats including Cleone, an 1860 yacht which could be Britain’s oldest pleasure sailing yacht (see CS7 April 2016). He developed the Dash as an exciting planing dinghy which can appeal to sailors of varying experience. Its lightness makes it easy to carry and it can be put on a car roof for transportation.
