KATY’s design is based on SUSAN, a successful 28’ schooner Murray Peterson designed for himself and his family. Murry’s son Bill Peterson lengthened the design by 2’ and changed the rig to a topsail cutter. KATY was built in 2004 by Ned Crosby and his esteemed crew at E.M. Crosby Boatworks on Cape Cod.
Construction is traditional, plank on frame/cedar on oak; computer lofted using CNC cut molds. Like SUSAN, KATY has a spoon bow in contrast with the clipper bow Peterson drew on many of his other designs. High bulwarks, ample freeboard and broad teak decks enhance the yacht’s big-boat feel.
Down below in her cozy cabin every square inch has been utilized brilliantly. The interior features a simple navigation station, a galley, and two V-berths that can be expanded to sleep four. The galley is fitted with a two-burner Force 10 stove and oven that is concealed by the counter when not in use. To port there is a fully enclosed head with additional storage space.
The joinery is bright finished teak, mahogany, and cypress, and the house overhead is painted off-white in the classic Herreshoff style. Countless traditional details abound, including deck prisms, bronze hardware, wooden blocks, and an antique Japanese binnacle.
KATY is a one-owner boat that has been meticulously maintained since her launch. Once commissioned for the 2017 season, plans are to have KATY in Maine waters by the beginning of July. Offered in “sail away” condition at $95,000—serious offers will be considered.
