At the Southampton Boat Show 2019 we visited the new Spirit CR50 yacht and talked to them about using Lignia on the yacht’s deck. Lignia is the new-ish FSC certified timber product which uses sustainable timber like pine that is impregnated with a resin which is then heat-cured to improve longevity and performance . Spirit’s MD Nigel Stuart says it will last longer than a normal teak deck.

More news from LIGNIA – named as finalist in Maritime UK Awards

The Barry based LIGNIA Wood Company® has been named as one of the most innovative companies in the UK’s £40bn maritime sector, after being shortlisted in the inaugural Maritime UK Awards.

The company has been nominated in the Most Innovative Product category for LIGNIA Yacht,  a real-wood alternative to teak decking which boasts enhanced stability and rot durability, ensuring peace of mind for yacht builders and owners alike. The unique product is created via a patent-pending timber modification process at LIGNIA’s state-of-the-art plant in Wales.

LIGNIA’s FSC®-certified softwood is harvested from sustainably-managed forests and is the first of its kind to be produced in the UK. The process results in a product which has the physical properties and aesthetic of popular hardwoods. It is the only proven, sustainable real-wood alternative to Burmese teak, up until now the standard wood species used in the yacht building sector for decks.

The Maritime UK Awards are being hosted by the Solent LEP and will take place at the Leonardo Royal Hotel Southampton Grand Harbour on 19 September, as thousands of people flock to the city for the Southampton International Boat Show.

In its 51st year, the show will also feature the debut of LIGNIA Yacht on Spirit Yachts’ 50CR (cruiser-racer), the first of the world-leading modern classic yacht designer and builder’s  range to feature LIGNIA since its replacement of teak.

Hans Ng, CEO of LIGNIA Wood Company, said: “To be shortlisted in the first-ever finals of the Maritime UK Awards, for our wonderful LIGNIA Yacht product, is a great indication of the huge strides LIGNIA has made in the industry. The innovation that we bring to the marine world is now starting to pay off as we see yacht brands working with us to develop and build beautiful and hard-working LIGNIA Yacht decks.”

Ben Murray, Director of Maritime UK, said: “Our judges have been blown away by the quality of entries in these inaugural awards. The bar really has been set high and the panel have had a difficult task whittling it down to the final shortlist. Those who have been named as finalists should be very proud.”

Stuart Baker, Head of Local Growth at the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and Chair of the Maritime UK Regional Council, said: “We’ve always known the maritime industries are innovative, but these award submissions have really affirmed that. We’ve seen some really interesting work that’s taking place and we can’t wait to unveil the winners in September.”
