The Puig Classic Regatta starts in Barcelona today, and to celebrate 10 years of racing Puig the sponsor company has unveiled an exhibition of photos – taking from the best of the series over a decade called ‘With the power of the wind’ . The exposition is at the Maritime Museum in Barcelona until the 16th – with free entry. Many famous classic yachts and incidents are featured among the 30 photographs taken by Nico Martínez, an internationally prestigious photographer who has captured many of the best moments of the regatta and of the vessels – many of more than 100 years old – since the Puig started in 2008.

The exhibition also contains the pictures of Alfred Farré and Luis Fernández, the winner and the finalist of the international award Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image – considered as the Oscars of the nautical photography – in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

Luis’ photo of Gipsy’s bow-woman hanging under the bowsprit after she lost her footing and fell, was taken on the first day of the Vela Classica regatta last year, in 2016, after racing had finished. Thankfully the woman got back aboard after her sea-drenching. It was shortlisted for the above competition and has become quite a famous photo. Gipsy, a Barcelona regular is a double ended Colin Archer wooden ketch built built in 1927 at the Echevarrieta and Larrinaga shipyard in Cadiz.
