Sir Robin Knox-Johnston receives his steak at the Golden Globe press conference in the Chain Locker pub in Falmouth, at lunchtime today. “I was desperate for a steak because I wanted something to chew,” said the famous solo circumnavigator, and Golden Globe winner, referring to his return to this very spot in 1969 after sailing for 312 days in Suhaili on a diet of dried and tinned food. After the steak RKJ was given lemon meringue pie – the same pudding he’d ordered after his landfall.

This afternoon he will sign copies of his new book at the Falmouth Bookseller before coming back to the Chain Locker at 6pm for a Suhaili evening in the bar.

Tomorrow the gathered fleet of 18 solo sailors will sail around Falmouth harbour from 10am before they start their race to Les Sables d’Olonne at 1pm. From there they have a chance to finish their preparations before the race around the globe south of the great capes begins on July 1.
