What this place needs is a proper Zulu – the pinnacle of the Scottish lugger design at the end of the 19th century. Plumb stem and with a radically raked stern post – of 45 degrees, typically these deep sea trawlers and herring drifters would be 70ft long and sail out to the north Atlantic.

Here is a trim example: fishing number 950 – out of Banff, entering Gorleston in 1904. Zulus were named after the Zulu warriors, of South Africa, from which many Scots were returning in 1880 and it’s a term of respect.

As an important part of British maritime heritage there are no large Zulus left in sailing condition and it would be great to see a project start to rebuild one… plans exist, but does the will to do it?
