Incredible footage from BBC Earth’s  The Hunt with Sir David Attenborough describing the life of flying fish as they take to the air and glide hundreds of metres, using their extended pectoral fins as wings on a breeze and their tails to drive them out of the water, in their bid to escape predators (in this case dorado). Then frigate birds see the hunt taking place and descend to see if they can catch the fish from the air… As Sir David says the flying fish are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.

(Incidentally this expression stems from the devil plank – the outermost plank on the deck of a ship – and a devil of a job to fit – into the curving side of the vessel, and the sea. It’s a place of danger as it refers to anyone or anything being clearly over the side of the ship.)
