Stern view of Gallant (off Brighton)

The sail cargo ship Gallant is on schedule to arrive in Newhaven, Sussex this Saturday 6th July at around 2pm, wind permitting. The 1916 89ft (27.2m) schooner has part of the Blue Schooner Company’s fleet in November 2017. Her cargo includes olive oil, almonds and sea salt. She was originally a Herring logger named Jannetje Margaretha, built in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands.

She is now sailing with cargoes as part of the Sail Boat Project which is also a community sailing school. Its Sail Cargo branch was set up to establish routes for sailing cargo using its own sail training vessels for cross channel routes, as well as longer passages.

She has sailed from Noirmoutier and Roscoff in France before making various scheduled visits at ports along the south coast. Her last port of call was Poole.

Gallant’s crew say: “We hope you’ll come and watch her sail into Newhaven Marina (Fort Road, BN9 9BY). We’ll be about from 2-7pm. If you’re not able to meet us in Newhaven, come and say see us on our own Jalapeno in Brighton Marina between 5-8pm Monday 8 July and enjoy a tasting of sail cargo Portuguese wines (with bottles available). We’ll be on the visitor pontoon, West Jetty. When you’re there, ring us on 07576 248348 and we can come and let you in.

Notes:

To make all this happen Sail Boat Project,  set up our Sail Cargo branch, a partnership to look at establishing sail cargo routes using our own sail training vessels for potential cross channel routes, as well as other boats working longer passages (see below). We are part of a wider network called the Sail Cargo Alliance, which brings together sail cargo vessels, growers and brokers.

  • All surplus from our Sail Cargo work goes to the Community Sailing Fund, established to help people from community groups in Sussex access our sailing activities
  • We pay producers a fair price up front, around 50-65% of the prices you pay goes direct to them, with accountability in our pricing outlined with each product
  • Importing high quality products that don’t grow on our islands, we are developing solutions that are small, simple and local. We are looking towards a future where we know we need to use less energy
  • By working towards zero emission transport we are taking practical steps in the face of climate chaos with an informed sense of urgency
  • Community supported shipping helps us keep control of food supply chains and expands the skills base of all those involved

Have your self an adventure this summer onboard one of our summer sailing trips. No previous sailing experience necessary. A great way to build on what you’ve learnt on a recent sailing course or just… have a low-impact holiday!
